Thousands of young men were incarcerated in Stalag VIIIB, in Lamsdorf, by the Germans during World War 2. Some of them were there for years, and accounts of how they coped are probably among the greatest rites of passage stories ever told.

Lamsdorf Death March

In early 1945, the Nazis evacuated the PoW camp and about 30,000 Allied PoWs were force-marched westward in appalling winter conditions for about four months. You can read an eye witness account here

RSM Sydney Sherriff

Lamsdorf links

Buckden Pike is about a Polish airman who miraculously survived the crash of his Wellington Bomber in the Yorkshire Dales in 1942, and was on the infamous Lamsdorf Death March.

Sgt Don Bruce's
site of 115 Squadron RAF contains the squadron's Roll of Honour, all proceeds of which go to the RAF Benevolent Fund.
